The Green Mess

Considering I live in New Mexico, where it can look brown and dry a lot, seeing all this green as I look outside my sunroom/office window is sort of refreshing. Our pond is overrun with water lilies. About 5 years ago a fellow bought almost all of them from us to put in a new housing development. As you can see, it did no permanent damage. I think I need to promote that happening again soon! Yes, there are fish trying to swim amidst that green mess. And, there are even flowers hiding somewhere. I did manage to get a pose from one of them.

Things to do:

Remove many lilies as soon as possible.

             Find the fish.

Head back over to myPotsandPlants.com to shop for pond and fountain goodies.

They have some amazing creatures to keep the fish and lilies company.

Hanna, the Hippo Spitter

Or how about …

Quack, The Duck

These two are only an example of the great selection of accessories you will find at myPotsandPlants.com. My work is cut out for me, and I will be sure to blog any progress.  Watch out Green Mess! Here I come.

My Potted Companions

I have mentioned here before that my first entrepeneurial adventure was an indoor plant store in the 1970’s. It was a kiosk in a large mall, but the structure itself was an amazing old greenhouse that had weathered time quite well, complete with very old glass and really cool wood gutters. I have very few pictures, and they are packed away to be filtered through someday.(Where was that cell phone with a handy camera back then?) It might be a worthwhile project to duplicate something similar to quench my thirst for a greenhouse. Thank goodness for my bright sunroom/office.

When I was growing up, my mom had a fairly large philodendron in our living room that I will never forget, mainly because one of my friends carved her name in one of the leafs. a fact that I never stopped hearing about from Mom. And, I am pretty sure my friend as been reminded a few times as we have reminisced the old days. It may have been the only houseplant, although I seem to remember African violets as well. Then, in the mid 1970’s houseplants made a huge comeback, along with lots of handmade pots and macrame hangers; I haven’t seen many of those lately. I have never been plant-less over the last 40 plus years, and I can honestly say I have had a least one hanging Boston fern in my house the whole time!  Right now I have two of them keeping the other 24 plants in my home company.

The one pictured started out a year ago fairly small in a six inch pot, so you can see that my plants love the sunroom/office as much as I do. Needless to say, I always have my eyes open for planters, plant stands and pots. I definitely have my attention on these beauties over at myPotsandPlanters.com.

THOSE DOG DAYS…

If asked, the dog that resides at my house would certainly agree that the dog days of summer have arrived.

It has been hot and humid (even here in Albuquerque) for days. Afternoons call out loud for a person to nap along with those dogs. Before I heed to that invitation, I want to remind all readers that the online places we refer you to have great ideas for summertime.

And if your windows are dirty, I always suggest that you HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.

If you insist on washing your own windows, please use a squeegee and a wetbar. And, the suggestion of using vinegar and wadded up newspapers that you see in a lot of “how to” info is really not a good one.Best tip…HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. They are not expensive and it really does improve your outlook on life!

Window Framing Art

Just sharing some fun for the weekend. We decided to visit the new location for a popular, local burger joint – oh ,they do serve steaks and chicken too – called The Grill.  Not a bad burger for sure. We really enjoyed the nostalgic decor as well. The wall next to our table displayed a lot of art work. I wanted to highlight this one because I like the idea a lot.

I think a window frame makes a pretty cool picture frame.

Sometimes It’s About Floors

WOVEN JUTE

My first encounter ever with jute was in the 1970’s when I owned a plant shop and everyone went bananas over macrame plant hangers. Remember those? I had no idea what it was really. Just knew it was some tough stuff. Next to cotton it is the second most important vegetable fiber and that makes it very hardy.  It won’t fade with a lot of sun exposure and it has great insulating properties. If you are needing an area rug, check these out at Best Home Fashion.  The perfect size – 5 by 8 – to fit almost anywhere, and with just the right pop of color. Look forward to a 20 % discount right now!

Jute fibers from the tall green stalk can measure over 10 feet. Twisting or braiding them makes them really strong.

WOOL AND JUTE STRIPE

I have just the spot for one of these in my sunroom/office. Now I need to decide which one I want. Head over to Best Home Fashion soon to pick out yours while they are on sale!

The Plant Stand

My love for clean windows and daylight was probably inspired by my love for indoor plants. Many years ago I owned and operated an indoor plant store that was inside a large shopping mall. The store itself was built with wood and glass from a very old greenhouse, and it sorta leaned up next to a Montgomery Wards; it even had neat wood gutters. Sure wish I had a picture, but any I did have are long gone. Now I have instead a sun-room office with a lot of windows, great light and, of course lotsa plants! And, I take pictures.

A few years back, I passed by a yard sale on my daily, morning walk. I spotted a really cool kitchen cart with stools, and they only wanted $10. I had no idea where I would put it but it was such a great deal. I knew it would fit in the sun-room, but I also knew I had too many plants in that room to add any furniture. Well, you can see above how that turned out. I think it has been my favorite plant stand.

Recently, I have been enjoying re-potting some plants and doing general maintenance on my green friends. I made a trip to the nursery I enjoy to buy a few new ones and now I have taken care of the older ones. It might be time to add some new stands as well.

Pretty sure this A-Frame Stand from myPotsandPlanters.com is a perfect fit!  Look how many plants it will hold. And, you can get it with or without the steel trays. I think that means after I order it I need to make another trip to my favorite nursery for more green friends. Well that certainly is not a problem for me! Check out the great selections at myPotsandPlanters.com All orders $49 and up qualify for FREE SHIPPING!

Oh, my quaint little greenhouse in the mall was called The Plant Stand.
