Pumpkin in the Window

o PUMPKIN

We bought a fat orange pumpkin,

The plumpest sort they sell.

We neatly scooped the inside out

and only left the shell.

We carved a funny funny-face

of silly shape and size,

A pointy nose,

a jagged mouth and two enormous eyes.

We set it in a window

and we put a candle in,

Then lit it up

for all to see Our jack-o-lantern grin.

HUMMER VISITS NAKED LADY

Every year the naked ladies return. Just as September arrives, the pond outside my sunroom/office windows welcomes the lovely Lycoris Radiata aka Spider Lily aka Naked Lady. This morning I was so lucky that a wonderful hummingbird chose to hang around a while. I was amazed he stayed for about 5 minutes and had a feast. Thank goodness for a handy cell phone camera!

These beautiful flowers are actually part of the amaryllis family. I love their color.

If you want to add some color to your yard, porch, patio or pond, head over to BloomingBulb.com and check out all of their fall planting ideas. They have many Amaryllis and Lilly selections.

WHOSE FEEDER IS THIS ANYWAY?

I can usually find ways to keep ants away from the hummingbird feeders. But, I have not figured out how to stop the woodpeckers from checking them out. This one, and ones like him, enjoy taking over the feeders whenever they feel like it. Probably is a lot easier than pecking away at the bark of a tree to find sap. As I was shooting a few pictures, a hummer tried to visit. After all, it is her feeder, or at least it was. There is tree just a few feet away in the front yard, but Mr Woodypants chose to sit on the feeder for at least 5 minutes.

If you enjoy watching the birds outside your windows like I do, consider heading over to myPotsandPlanters.comThey have some great bird feeders.

Inside Hummer

Unlike some areas, New Mexico only sees hummingbirds between April and October. This year, other than an occasional one in April, they were busy somewhere else than my backyard until mid July. Thank goodness things are back to normal, and I am seeing a lot of them, and often. Those wonderful little creatures always manage to distract me immediately from whatever I am supposed to be doing.  They often come up to the windows in my sunroom/office and flutter longingly as they spot the many plants and flowers I have inside. Yesterday morning the one pictured above decided to color outside the lines (or should I say “inside”) and fly into the sunroom. That’s her looking out, trying to make sense of it all.

That window guy who lives at my house jumped in to help. His attempts to shoo her back outside were in vain. As much as I would have loved for her to stay a while, I was not so sure the dog who lives here would ignore the situation. I have seen that same dog try to play with birds, inside and out, too many times. Finally, he (the window guy/husband) managed to get the lost, little one cupped in two hands long enough to release her into the great outdoors. It was an exciting visit for sure!

I just love those hummers. I am amazed at how many different sizes and colors there are. I did a little research and discovered that there are about 17 different species that you can observe in New Mexico alone. Even the Allen’s hummingbird, that limits it’s breeding territory to a very small area up the west coast, will migrate back through here in late summer. Because of their vibrant orange color, they are easy to notice. Next time I see one I will invite her in for flowers and tea.

The Green Mess

Considering I live in New Mexico, where it can look brown and dry a lot, seeing all this green as I look outside my sunroom/office window is sort of refreshing. Our pond is overrun with water lilies. About 5 years ago a fellow bought almost all of them from us to put in a new housing development. As you can see, it did no permanent damage. I think I need to promote that happening again soon! Yes, there are fish trying to swim amidst that green mess. And, there are even flowers hiding somewhere. I did manage to get a pose from one of them.

Things to do:

Remove many lilies as soon as possible.

             Find the fish.

Head back over to myPotsandPlants.com to shop for pond and fountain goodies.

They have some amazing creatures to keep the fish and lilies company.

Hanna, the Hippo Spitter

Or how about …

Quack, The Duck

These two are only an example of the great selection of accessories you will find at myPotsandPlants.com. My work is cut out for me, and I will be sure to blog any progress.  Watch out Green Mess! Here I come.

My Potted Companions

I have mentioned here before that my first entrepeneurial adventure was an indoor plant store in the 1970’s. It was a kiosk in a large mall, but the structure itself was an amazing old greenhouse that had weathered time quite well, complete with very old glass and really cool wood gutters. I have very few pictures, and they are packed away to be filtered through someday.(Where was that cell phone with a handy camera back then?) It might be a worthwhile project to duplicate something similar to quench my thirst for a greenhouse. Thank goodness for my bright sunroom/office.

When I was growing up, my mom had a fairly large philodendron in our living room that I will never forget, mainly because one of my friends carved her name in one of the leafs. a fact that I never stopped hearing about from Mom. And, I am pretty sure my friend as been reminded a few times as we have reminisced the old days. It may have been the only houseplant, although I seem to remember African violets as well. Then, in the mid 1970’s houseplants made a huge comeback, along with lots of handmade pots and macrame hangers; I haven’t seen many of those lately. I have never been plant-less over the last 40 plus years, and I can honestly say I have had a least one hanging Boston fern in my house the whole time!  Right now I have two of them keeping the other 24 plants in my home company.

The one pictured started out a year ago fairly small in a six inch pot, so you can see that my plants love the sunroom/office as much as I do. Needless to say, I always have my eyes open for planters, plant stands and pots. I definitely have my attention on these beauties over at myPotsandPlanters.com.

They are marked down $20 right now and shipping is FREE on any order $49 and up. My only problem is I might need to go plant shopping! I hope you have that problem too. Be sure to check out all their departments for any gardening and indoor plant needs.

THOSE DOG DAYS…

If asked, the dog that resides at my house would certainly agree that the dog days of summer have arrived.

It has been hot and humid (even here in Albuquerque) for days. Afternoons call out loud for a person to nap along with those dogs. Before I heed to that invitation, I want to remind all readers that the online places we refer you to have great ideas for summertime.

mypotsandplanters.com  decor for the patio and indoors – FREE SHIPPING on orders over $49

bloomingbulb.com fall planting ideas – up to 60% OFF

wallpaperforwindows.com  privacy and decor for your windows

blindsexpress.com blinds and shades at discounted prices – FREE SHIPPING ( up to 94″ wide)

sunglasswarehouse.com great styles – super prices – FREE SHIPPING on orders over $25

And if your windows are dirty, I always suggest that you HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.

If you insist on washing your own windows, please use a squeegee and a wetbar. And, the suggestion of using vinegar and wadded up newspapers that you see in a lot of “how to” info is really not a good one.Best tip…HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. They are not expensive and it really does improve your outlook on life!
