For Your Windows

THOSE DOG DAYS…

If asked, the dog that resides at my house would certainly agree that the dog days of summer have arrived.

It has been hot and humid (even here in Albuquerque) for days. Afternoons call out loud for a person to nap along with those dogs. Before I heed to that invitation, I want to remind all readers that the online places we refer you to have great ideas for summertime.

mypotsandplanters.com  decor for the patio and indoors – FREE SHIPPING on orders over $49

bloomingbulb.com fall planting ideas – up to 60% OFF

wallpaperforwindows.com  privacy and decor for your windows

blindsexpress.com blinds and shades at discounted prices – FREE SHIPPING ( up to 94″ wide)

sunglasswarehouse.com great styles – super prices – FREE SHIPPING on orders over $25

And if your windows are dirty, I always suggest that you HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.

If you insist on washing your own windows, please use a squeegee and a wetbar. And, the suggestion of using vinegar and wadded up newspapers that you see in a lot of “how to” info is really not a good one.Best tip…HIRE A PROFESSIONAL. They are not expensive and it really does improve your outlook on life!

At This Window You Get Potatoes

20170618_161339-e1497976936992.jpg

I just love it when a business endeavor succeeds! I had the pleasure of attending the Oregon BrewFest this past Sunday. My nephew Ken and his wife Amy recently debuted a wonderful food cart here in the Pacific Northwest ( I say here because I was raised in Portland, and am visiting from ABQ). Baked & Loaded Potatoes operates from a cute, little, custom renovated school bus. That’s my sis posing in the Spud Bus window last Sunday at the event held in Silverton, Oregon.

I certainly am not a food critic, but I can honestly say the baked potato I ate was spectacular! What a great addition to all the brew that the festival offered.

If you live anywhere near Portland or Salem, and ever need taters served, or if you just want to follow where the Spud Bus goes be sure to check out their site. No matter where you reside, like their page on Facebook.

When a new business succeeds we all win! Great job, Ken and Amy!

The Plant Stand

My love for clean windows and daylight was probably inspired by my love for indoor plants. Many years ago I owned and operated an indoor plant store that was inside a large shopping mall. The store itself was built with wood and glass from a very old greenhouse, and it sorta leaned up next to a Montgomery Wards; it even had neat wood gutters. Sure wish I had a picture, but any I did have are long gone. Now I have instead a sun-room office with a lot of windows, great light and, of course lotsa plants! And, I take pictures.

A few years back, I passed by a yard sale on my daily, morning walk. I spotted a really cool kitchen cart with stools, and they only wanted $10. I had no idea where I would put it but it was such a great deal. I knew it would fit in the sun-room, but I also knew I had too many plants in that room to add any furniture. Well, you can see above how that turned out. I think it has been my favorite plant stand.

Recently, I have been enjoying re-potting some plants and doing general maintenance on my green friends. I made a trip to the nursery I enjoy to buy a few new ones and now I have taken care of the older ones. It might be time to add some new stands as well.

Pretty sure this A-Frame Stand from myPotsandPlanters.com is a perfect fit!  Look how many plants it will hold. And, you can get it with or without the steel trays. I think that means after I order it I need to make another trip to my favorite nursery for more green friends. Well that certainly is not a problem for me! Check out the great selections at myPotsandPlanters.com All orders $49 and up qualify for FREE SHIPPING!

Oh, my quaint little greenhouse in the mall was called The Plant Stand.

MONKEY CUPS

I never heard of these either!

Called a Monkey Cup, the tropical plant’s real name is Nepenthes. It enjoys eating insects and has found a way to make sure the bugs’ sticky feet do not grab onto the inside surface. Whatever is going on in the interior walls of this plant has inspired a new idea having to do with frying pans and window cleaning. Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surface (SLIPS) is the result. What makes those little bugs slide down the plant’s walls will also be good for non-stick pans and self cleaning windows. Pretty interesting concept, but I would not fire my window cleaner yet. Check out the full story here.

When I was really young, like under 10, we had a carnivorous plant in our yard that looked like this. I have never seen one since. I recall it had a very weird scent.

I would like some in a new greenhouse outside my windows. Wonder if they would survive here in the Southwest.
